iPhone 8 rumor: USB-C tech will give it super fast charging

The fast charging will still come courtesy of a lightning port.

When the highly anticipated iPhone 8 finally drops later this year, it’ll be tough to get Apple fanatics to put their devices down until their batteries eventually die, that is.

There is some (potential) good news for power users, though: powering up the iPhone 8 might just be the fastest, most seamless experience of any iPhone yet. The iPhone 8 could be in line for some new quick-charging capabilities, according to a recent Barclays investors note obtained by MacRumors.

The note claims the iPhone 8 will be bundled with the necessary specs for the fast charging thanks to new USB-C Power Delivery chips in the device and a new power adapter, which would allow Apple to introduce the capability without ditching its proprietary Lightning connector. The new prediction builds on previous insights from respected Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo, who wrote about potential USB-C to Lightning quick charging in a research note back in March.

The iPhone 8 itself will be built with a USB-C PowerDelivery chip, according to the Barclays note, and its packaging will include a 10W power adapter sporting its own integrated chip. A new USB-C connector could also be included with the device.

The note claims the chips will be supplied by Cypress Semiconductor, the company that already provides Apple with the CYPD2104 chip included in the 10.5-inch iPad Pro.

When the rumor about Apple adopting USB-C tech in the iPhone first broke, it sounded like the company would be abandoning the Lightning port. That didn’t sit well with most anyone who’s owned an iPhone or iPad since 2012, although some, like our own Lance Ulanoff, embraced the port’s evolution.

Reports from Kuo and others tempered the outrage, predicting instead that the Lightning port would be augmented with new USB-C capabilities to keep Apple’s revenue stream from the proprietary design.

The new USB-C-powered fast charging might not be the only new power feature coming to the iPhone 8, either. It’s rumored to come packing a bigger battery than in past iterations, and a wireless charging capability is one of the most prevalent new specs floating around the rumor mill. All signs point to Apple using the Qi standard for inductive charging, which is already available from competitors like Samsung.

The phone is also expected to have a new OLED edge-to-edge screen with an integrated Touch ID sensor, a new vertically-oriented dual camera, and other features that could push the price above $1,000.
